Nina Simone was one of the most extraordinary and influential artists of the twentieth century—an enduring icon of American music. A classically trained pianist turned powerful vocalist, she became known for her ability to blend genres like jazz, blues, folk, classical, and gospel into a sound that was uniquely her own. More than a performer, Simone was a consummate storyteller—a modern-day griot, as she would later come to understand—who used her voice and artistry as tools for liberation, empowerment, and truth-telling.
